Merlyn Kennels | Hullston Shelties

Merlyn Kennels started over forty years ago with a background in breeding and exhibiting collies. With several champions to our credit, we enjoyed watching the Shetland Sheepdogs while at shows and soon fell in love with the breed. We house 4 to 6 dogs of our own, and have bred, owned and shown several champions over the years. We usually have one litter per year.

We have a small boarding and grooming facility in Robinson Township, outside of Pittsburgh. We have felt lucky as it has been a "family affair" where our children were very active and assisted in all aspects from grooming to whelping. Now it is even more exciting as our grandchildren are taking part by socializing puppies and helping during summer vacations.

We are fortunate to have excellent facilities to accommodate exercise for our show dogs as well as those of our friends who utilize the exercise hills (Pittsburgh is not known for having flat terrain) to condition their dogs.

Debbie and I share so many things in life besides the dogs. Our families have grown together and we share many of the same goals. We aim to produce a balanced, typey sheltie that is beautiful to look at and mentally and physically sound. We always felt that we could accomplish more by joining forces and enhance our journey together.

A teacher at heart, I am passionate about mentoring the novice exhibitors. I love to pass the knowledge along and enjoy seeing people that I have helped go on to be successful.

Earl and I are Charter Members of the Three Rivers SSC of Greater Pittsburgh, Inc. I have held several positions over the years from Vice-president to Show Chairman. We have two specialty shows, obedience, rally and agility trials and host seminars annually so there is something for everyone’s interest. I also belong to ASSA and the Collie Club of America, as well as Western PA Kennel Association.

Hullston Shelties began in November, 1986 with the acquisition of our first Sheltie and foundation bitch, Ch Merlyn’s Hot Off The Press, CGC, TDI. Paige was purchased as a twelve week old puppy by my husband for me as an early Christmas present. Thus began an adventure that has lasted for over two decades.

Since the dogs are integral part of our busy household, I prefer to keep our numbers low (generally four). This allows us time to participate in family activities and provide our dogs with the attention that they deserve. I average one well planned litter per year, but it is not unusual for me to forego breeding a year or two depending upon personal obligations. I work outside the home so it has been a blessing to be only a five minute drive from Rusty who whelps my occasional litter. She and I share similar views. We are very adamant about breeding to the standard, always striving to improve and move closer to the ideal sheltie. We value moderate, balanced dogs with a beautiful expression, good structure and effortless movement. Last but not least, the dogs must be temperamentally sound and genetically healthy.

During this incredible journey in the dog world, I have met many wonderful people who share my passion. With their assistance and the very special support of my family, I have been able to accomplish the original goals which I set for myself - producing dual titled breed champions, Group Winners, performance titled dogs and an ROM sire.

I am a Charter Member of the Three Rivers SSC of Greater Pittsburgh, Inc. where I have held several positions. I also belong to ASSA and Western PA Kennel Association, one of the local all breed clubs.
